Georgia Officer Dies Weeks After Being Shot in the Face

Officer Michael Smith of the Henry County (GA) Police Department died early Friday morning, weeks after being shot in the face during a call of a suspicious person at a dental office on December 6.

Officer Michael Smith of the Henry County (GA) Police Department died early Friday morning, weeks after being shot in the face during a call of a suspicious person at a dental office on December 6.

The agency posted on its Facebook page, "It is with deep sadness to announce that Officer Michael Smith passed away approximately 4:30 A.M. this morning at Piedmont Hospital (Atlanta, Georgia) due to complications from injuries he sustained from a gunshot wound in the line of duty. Please keep the Smith family in your prayers. Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming."

According to WSB-TV, Officer Smith was struggling with 53-year-old Dimaggio McNelly during the incident when the officer's gun went off, hitting both of them.

McNelly also died in the shooting.
