An officer with the Chicago (IL) Police Department was responding to a domestic incident involving a subject with an undisclosed mental illness when he was shot in the chest by a suspect who was holding his parents hostage at gunpoint.
The bullet was stopped by the body armor the officer was wearing. He was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation and deemed to be in good condition, according to WGN-TV.
Officers returned fire, but did not strike the man, who was later taken into custody and brought to a hospital for a mental health evaluation
According to police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, the officer is in good health, "other than shock from the incident."
