Nebraska Lawmaker Proposes Law to Ban School Resource Officers
Nebraska State Senator Ernie Chambers—the longest-serving state senator in the history of the Cornhusker State—has introduced legislation that would ban law enforcement officers from patrolling school halls.
School Resource Officers may soon become a thing of the past in Nebraska.
Nebraska State Senator Ernie Chambers—the longest-serving state senator in the history of the Cornhusker State—has introduced legislation that would ban law enforcement officers from patrolling school halls.
According to Fox News, the bill would not prevent law enforcement officers providing security for an extracurricular activity, nor would it bar them from responding to a public safety threat.
Another proposed law—introduced by Senator Patty Pansing Brooks—seeks to more clearly define the role of SROs to ensure that there is clarity that they are present in schools only for school safety and law enforcement violations, not for handling disciplinary issues related to school policy or student misbehavior.
Both bills are now before the judiciary committee.
