A plainclothes officer with the New York Police Department was wounded in a gunfight that left the assailant dead on Thursday afternoon.
According to the New York Times, the officer—who has not been identified—was struck in the arm.
He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Upon his release from the hospital, dozens of his fellow officers lined the street and applauded him as he got into a car to go home.
