A gunman is dead following an officer-involved shooting in California's Central Valley on Tuesday evening.
According to the Sacramento Bee, an officer with the Citrus Heights (CA) Police Department and his K-9 partner were among several officers responding to a call of shots fired near a shopping mall when the armed man opened fire on them.
The officer was grazed in his uniform—the bullet did not strike the officer. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding the gunman.
A K-9 that chased after the suspect was initially believed to have been shot during the gun battle. Police said Wednesday the K-9, named Axel, was not injured, reports KCRA.
