Officers with the Oakland (CA) Police Department will now operate under a much more restrictive policy regarding the search for subjects on probation and parole.

According to CBS News, under state law, officers may search anyone determined to be on probation or parole, but the new policy in Oakland will place restrictions on that ability.

Oakland officers will be instructed to not immediately inquire about someone's probation or parole status during an interaction unless there is some threat to officer or public safety.

The Oakland City Council unanimously approved the new policy on Tuesday.
