Officers with the Philadelphia Police Department who came upon a confrontation between a pedestrian and a motorist were forced to shoot one of the men involved when he refused repeated commands to drop an edged weapon he was holding.

According to NBC News, officers spotted a Nissan SUV driving backwards with a man walking alongside the driver's side window and reaching into the car as it moved.

The officers activated their squad car's lights and siren and the minivan took off. The man, however, remained and the officers attempted to approach the man to defuse the situation.

The man then refused to comply with commands to drop the box cutter and lunged at the officers.

Part of the incident was captured on cell phone video.

In it one can hear a bystander shouting to the man—who is reportedly homeless—"They're going to kill you, bro."

The man was transported to a nearby hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
