Union Chief Issues Scathing Statement on Retiring San Francisco DA
There is widespread speculation that Gascon will challenge Los Angeles County DA Jackie Lacey in a race that could serve as the largest test yet of a nationwide push to elect progressive-minded law enforcement officials.
George Gascon—who in 2011 was appointed to the office of District Attorney by then San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to succeed departing DA Kamala Harris—has announced his resignation from the post.
According to the Los Angeles Times, there is widespread speculation that Gascon will challenge Los Angeles County DA Jackie Lacey in a race that could serve as the largest test yet of a nationwide push to elect progressive-minded law enforcement officials.
Upon hearing the news that Gascon will be leaving office, the president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association issued a scathing statement that put a cap on the contentious relationship between rank-and-file officers and the city's top prosecutor.
"We are praying for the residents of Los Angeles hoping that George Gascon does not do to their city what he did to San Francisco during his tenure; double digit increases in crime, author of Proposition 47 that created our criminal justice revolving door, cars broken into by the thousands and neighborhoods ravaged by open air drug markets and crime," SFPOA President Tony Montoya said.
"We are happy he will be leaving San Francisco but feel horrible that he is taking his record of failure to an even larger county where he can cause even more harm to public safety. Good riddance," Montoya said.
