A former officer with the Punta Gorda (FL) Police Department who fatally shot a 73-year-old woman during a demonstration at a citizens police academy in 2016 will not serve time, having accepted a plea deal this week.
According to NBC News, Lee Coel was performing in a "shoot/don't shoot" exercise when he shot Mary Knowlton, who had volunteered to participate.
Coel's plea deal stipulates that he spend 10 years on probation.
