An officer with the New York Police Department who was reportedly violently hit in the head with a metal chair during a deadly fight emerged from a medically induced coma over the weekend.
According to Fox News, officials say 53-year-old Officer Lesly Lafontant was put into a coma Friday following a fight at a nail salon in Brooklyn that left Lafontant's attacker dead.
On the NYPD Facebook page, the department announced that Officer was released from a Brooklyn hospital Monday.
Police say Lafontant had been attempting to arrest a man accused of urinating inside the business and who had warrants out when a subject—identified as Kwesi Ashun—entered the establishment, grabbed a metal chair, and started striking Lafontant in the head.
Another officer deployed a TASER, but it was ineffective, police say. They say that's when Lafontant opened fire with his service weapon, fatally wounding Ashun.
Officials said Lafontant's injuries included broken orbital bones and an eye injury, and he will require physical therapy to aid in his recovery.
