A San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) police officer was killed while working security at a Southeast Side IHOP early Saturday morning.
Officers say the incident started just before 4 A.M. when Detective Cliff Martinez, a 28-year-veteran with the school district, tried to break up a fight between a group of people inside the restaurant.
The fight escalated, officials say, and moved outside to the parking lot. Police believe Martinez was assaulted in the frenzy and when the suspects tried to leave, two suspects in a car ran over the officer, pinning him beneath the vehicle. The suspects then fled the scene on foot, Fox News reports.
Suspects, Alfred Martinez-Contreras, 29, and Jorge Lopez, 23, are in custody and facing charges of capital murder. A third suspect, Victor Lopez, 21, is at large.
Police believe the suspects ran over the officer intentionally, backed up, and ran over him again, all while customers and IHOP employees pleaded for them to stop, Fox News reports.
