An officer with the White Mountain Apache Police Department was fatally shot early Monday in Arizona.

According to AZfamily.com, Officer David Kellywood responded to a call of gunfire at a casino shortly after midnight and upon arrival at the scene immediately came under fire.

"The subject immediately engaged in a violent, physical altercation with the officer, during which, the officer was shot," Navajo County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. "A second responding officer arrived shortly after, and fearing for his life and the public’s safety, shot the suspect."

Both the officer and suspect were transported to a nearby hospital where they died of their injuries.
