A man is dead after leading suburban Atlanta police on a wild chase that ended with him crashing into Lake Lanier in Hall County, GA, and exchanging fire with officers.
Gwinnett County police told WSBTV the man shot at them from the sinking vehicle and they returned fire.
Police say the man was involved in a crash just before 5 p.m. Friday. He then reportedly jumped out of the car with a rifle and ran from the scene. The other people involved in the crash suffered minor injuries.
The man then carjacked a nearby car and took off, according to police.
Officers chased him into Shoal Creek Park, where police say he opened fire at officers. The officers fired back on the car, which then rolled into Lake Lanier. Police say the suspect continued to fire shots as the car sunk into the lake. WSVN reports one patrol vehicle was hit multiple times.
The suspect's body was recovered by the Hall County Sheriff's Office dive team. A cause of death has not been determined.
The suspect has been identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as James Monahan Jr., 26, of Ellabell.
