An officer with the Chesterfield County (VA) Police Department reportedly fired a single round at an armed man who refused to comply with commands to drop his weapon on Sunday evening.

According to Colonial Heights, VA, Police, who also responded to the call, a woman emerged from the home in Colonial Heights safely after police arrived to the scene of a domestic disturbance, but a man barricaded himself inside and officers saw him through a window holding a rifle, reports NBC News.

Police say as officers tried to speak with the man, he opened the front door, holding a rifle and confronted police. Officers reportedly gave commands, but he did not comply, leading a Chesterfield County officer to fire a single round.

The gunman was then transported to a nearby hospital where police say he was in critical but stable condition.
