The hikers—who were believed to be from the Czech Republic—were found dead in the Dachstein region after several helicopters and dozens of rescuers swarmed the scene to search for survivors, according to Heribert Eisl, head of operations for the local mountain rescue team.
The 33-year-old police officer—whose name has not been released—was killed in a separate avalanche in the southern Carinthia region of Austria when a large piece of frozen snow struck him during an Alpine training exercise, state authorities said.
