An officer with the Atlanta Police Department is helping children in his community stay digitally connected during the Coronavirus—COVID-19—pandemic that has shuttered schools and forced kids to take classes online via various internet meeting websites.
According to Fox News, Officer Keith Backmon has used his "hazardous duty" bonus pay to donate tablet computers to five children so they will be able to complete their school assignments.
Backmon—a 16 year veteran of the department—stayed in touch with the families of two 11-year-old girls who were almost shot when a man randomly shot at their apartment building. When he learned about their lack of access to technology to complete their school assignments, he decided to use the extra pay he was receiving for hazardous duty to get them squared away with the tools they need to do their work during the lockdown.
"As a public servant, it’s my job to give back to the community," Backmon said.
