An officer with the New York Police Department has been charged with third-degree assault for allegedly shoving to the street a woman who had been participating in a protest in the wake of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis late last month.

According to NBC News, the officer—Vincent D'Andraia, who serves the city with the 73rd Precinct—was seen on a video that was widely shared on various social media platforms, causing the department to suspend him.
The individual who was allegedly pushed to the ground has been identified as Dounya Zayer. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she was treated for what were reported to be non-life-treating injuries.
In response to the charges levied against officer D'Andraia, New York Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch said on Monday that Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD leaders are "once again ... sacrificing cops to save their own skin."
He added, "They created the failed strategy for managing these demonstrations. They sent police officers out to do the job with no support and no clear plan."
