Several officers with the Tampa (FL) Police Department were reportedly ambushed early Saturday morning while responding to a call for service.

According to Fox News, Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said that officers were called to an intersection where there were reports of shots fired and a possible gunshot victim present at the scene.

When officers arrived, hundreds of people blocked the area, and as police attempted to locate the possible gunshot victim, the crowd became aggressive, surrounding officers and throwing objects at them as several subjects jumped on one of the officer's patrol vehicles.

Dozens of officers responded to the melee, and two were injured by thrown objects. Both were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The entire event was captured on video taken from a police helicopter hovering overhead.

Chief Dugan said that investigators are reviewing that video—as well as other available video sources—with the aim of making arrests of individuals who attacked the officers.
