A man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to run over an officer with the Beckley (WV) Police Department with an All-terrain Vehicle (ATV) on Tuesday night.
The agency posted on Facebook, that Corporal Neal Smith observed what he believed to be a hand to hand drug transaction between two parties—one individual wearing an ATV helmet and another in a dark colored civilian vehicle.
As Corporal Smith exited his patrol car and began to approach the pair, the man on the ATV rapidly accelerated the ATV, police say.
Corporal Smith was struck by the fleeing ATV, causing significant injury to his lower extremities, the agency said. The driver of the ATV continued to flee the area but wrecked a short time later and fled on foot.
Corporal Smith was transported a nearby hospital where he was treated and released
The suspect remains at large.
