Texas Officer Dies in Head-On Vehicle Collision with Wrong-Way Driver

An officer with the Beaumont (TX) Police Department died on Sunday morning when the patrol vehicle she was driving was struck head-on by a car travelling in the wrong way on a local highway. Another officer was seriously wounded in the collision, according to reports.

According to KHOU-TV, 23-year-old Sheena Yarbrough Powell was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision.

Officer Gabriel Fells—who was driving the patrol vehicle at the time of the crash—was transported to a nearby hospital with undisclosed injuries and listed in serious condition.

Texas Department of Public Safety said in a statement that the driver of the other vehicle—identified as 18-year-old Luis Torres—was driving south in the northbound lane without headlights.

Texas DPS is investigating the crash.
