NYPD Changing Shift Schedule to Deal With Violence, Protests, COVID-19

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea ordered two-thirds of all cops under the rank of captain who have off both Saturdays and Sundays to switch their shifts.

Officers with the New York Police Department who have in the past had both Saturday and Sunday off will soon have to readjust their definition of "the weekend" as the department is changing the shift schedule.

According to the Daily News, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea ordered two-thirds of all cops under the rank of captain who have off both Saturdays and Sundays to switch their shifts.

The change is being made "due to the combination of increased violence, ongoing protests, COVID-19 restrictions and reduction to overtime funding," Shea said in the memo.

The new schedule will have a portion of the officers working Sunday through Thursday and another group working Tuesday through Saturday.

The changes take place at the end of August and will "remain in place until further notice."
