Officers with the Buffalo (NY) Police Department will no longer be required to display their names on their uniforms.
According to the New York Post, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told reporters that officers will now wear an identifying number instead of their names per a police department policy change.
The policy went into effect last week to protect officers from threat incidents.
Mayor Brown explained further that the change in policy was made about a week ago due to ongoing concerns for officer safety. Brown says officers have been subjected to online threats targeting them and their families.
BPD Captain Jeff Rinaldo said that more than a dozen officers have received threats.
Critics of the move have called for Mayor Brown's resignation as well as the resignation of Police Commissioner Byron Lockwood and District Attorney John Flynn.
