Officer Involved in 2018 Fatal Shooting of Security Guard Won't Be Charged

Illinois Prosecutors have determined that they will not file criminal charges against the officer with the Midlothian Police Department who fatally shot Jemel Roberson—who was working outside of a south suburban nightclub in 2018. 

According to CBS News , Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx's office said in a press release they concluded that the totality of evidence is "insufficient to support criminal charges against Midlothian Police Officer Ian Covey."

Roberson was working a security job at local night club when a fight broke out, causing calls for police response. Dispatchers indicated to responding officers that there was an armed man at the scene. Upon arrival, officers encountered Roberson and reportedly gave commands for him to drop his weapon.

A confrontation ensued. Shots were fired, leaving Roberson fatally wounded.

Roberson's mother is seeking $1 million in damages in the lawsuit, which names the Village of Midlothian and Covey as plaintiffs.
