A sergeant with the Houston Police Department was fatally shot and another officer wounded as they responded to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex early Tuesday morning.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Sergeant Harold Preston, 65, died after being transported to a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds to the head and neck. Preston had served 41 years with the Houston PD.
He was reportedly surrounded by family members at his hospital bed when he passed away.
Officer Courtney Waller was also struck during the incident. His condition has not been disclosed but early reports indicate that he was hit in the arm.
The suspected gunman—identified by police as 51-year-old Elmer Manzano—is a Salvadorian who has a long criminal history, according to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo.
