Sheriff Hobart Lewis said in a press conference that Master Deputy Conley Jumper, 52, effected a traffic stop around 3 pm Tuesday. During that stop, at least one of the occupants of the vehicle reportedly started fighting with Jumper.
The altercation ended when the stopped vehicle accelerated back onto the interstate and crashed into a tractor-trailer truck, Sheriff Hobart said. Backup deputies arriving on scene, then reportedly collided with the suspect vehicle.
Three deputies and two occupants of the suspect vehicle were transported to a local hospital.
Jumper died from his injuries at the hospital. The conditions of the other two injured deputies and of the occupants of the suspect vehicle have not been release.
Jumper leaves behind a wife and daughter.
"Jumper was an officer who embodied the true essence of a public servant," Sheriff Lewis said during the press conference. "He had more certifications and instructed more classes than anyone can count and that’s because he always strived to be the best deputy he could be. He was a tireless worker and loving friend and he had a heart of gold. He will be missed dearly by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him."
Master Deputy Jumper was promoted posthumously to sergeant.
