Fatal Police Shooting Sparks Protests in Chicago Suburb

Waukegan, IL, is the latest site of protests over police use of force after an officer fatally shot a young black man who was the passenger in a vehicle that police said reversed toward an officer.

The Waukegan Police Department on Thursday said an officer was "investigating an occupied vehicle" Tuesday when the suspects fled the scene. Later, a second officer spotted and approached the vehicle, which they said began moving in reverse toward him. The officer, who feared for his safety, fired his duty pistol, the department said.

The passenger, 19-year-old Marcellis Stinnette, was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries, CBS reports. Police said no weapons were found inside the vehicle.

The driver, who police only identified as a woman in her 20s, was hospitalized with serious injuries but is expected to recover.

Protesters on Thursday marched across the city, calling on the Department of Justice to take over the investigation. They also demanded the release of video from the video. Illinois State Police are currently reviewing dashcam footage and body camera videos from the officers.
