FL Deputy Killed in Vehicle Ramming Attack 1 Shift from Retirement

Master Corporal Brian LaVigne was killed, when a suspect who was fleeing deputies, intentionally crashed into the driver's side of his patrol vehicle, Sheriff Chad Chronister said during a news conference.

A Hillsborough County (FL) Sheriff's Deputy who was one shift away from retirement was killed Monday when his vehicle was intentionally rammed, officials say.

Master Corporal Brian LaVigne was killed, when a suspect who was fleeing deputies, intentionally crashed into the driver's side of his patrol vehicle, Sheriff Chad Chronister said during a news conference.

The sheriff's office said the suspect Travis Zachary Gabriel Garrett, 28, is charged with first-degree murder, DUI manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of resisting arrest, felony criminal mischief and aggravated fleeing to elude, WTSP reports.

LaVigne had one more day of work before he was to retire after 30 years, the sheriff said. He is survived by his wife and two adult children; one is a deputy with the sheriff's office.
