Chicago Officer Killed, Another Critically Wounded at Traffic Stop

A Chicago officer was killed and another officer critically wounded when they were shot during a traffic stop Saturday night. Three suspects are in custody.
The slain officer has been identified as Officer Ella French, 29. Officer French joined the Chicago Police Department in 2018. She was assigned to the police department’s community safety team working with the gun task force, WGN reports.
The other officer, with the department since August 2014, is fighting for his life in critical condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center, the Chicago Tribune reports.
There were reportedly three people in the suspect vehicle, two males and one female. A male passenger reportedly shot both officers from the back seat of the car. Police Supt. David Brown said the officers shot back, wounding the shooter. Another man and a woman who were in the car are also being questioned.
Sources told CBS 2 that a third officer with Officer French and the wounded officer shot the suspect. The source said that happened after the two officers were wounded.
Police said the two men who were in the car were taken into custody Saturday night, including one who was shot and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center Oak Lawn in serious condition.
Police arrested the female suspect Sunday morning, Brown said.
Police said the suspect’s weapon was recovered.
As of Monday afternoon, no charges had been filed.
