Video released by the Illinois State Police on Friday shows an inmate in a wheelchair lunge for a deputy's firearm, and then struggle with him on the ground. A second deputy entered the room and shot the inmate during the altercation.
The man identified by authorities as Fredrick Goss, 55, is on trial for armed robbery and exchanging gunfire with police.
Goss was hospitalized. Police did not release further details about his injuries, WCIA reports.
Goss was at the Jefferson County (IL) Courthouse for a trial. He was uncuffed while being transported in a wheelchair to trial where he was to be unrestrained.
