Escondido, CA, police have released a more than 12-minute video detailing a December incident that led to the death of a homicide suspect and the wounding of an officer. The shootout followed a lengthy vehicle pursuit.

The video then shows Salgado-Cazares’ truck finally coming to a stop, followed closely by two armored vehicles and other police SUVs. In his voiceover, Escondido Police Chief Ed Varso says the man “immediately exited the vehicle and exchanged gunfire with two Escondido police officers” who had been riding in the armored truck behind him.

Cazares was struck by at least one of the officers’ bullets and badly wounded. Before he went down, Salgado-Cazares shot Officer Danny Armenta in the left side of his chest.

Officer Armenta was treated at the hospital and made a complete recovery, eventually returning to duty, Varso said.
