A Homewood, AL, police officer, who sustained critical injuries when his patrol motorcycle collided with another patrol vehicle during a pursuit Tuesday, is hospitalized and reported to be in stable condition.
Sgt. John Carr, of the Homewood Police Department, tells ABC33/40 the officer could've been going anywhere from 75 to 100 miles per hour when he crashed.
The officer was operating his motorcycle in a support role, police say, when he collided with a Homewood Police Department SUV. As the fleeing vehicle approached exit 112 on Interstate 59 it made an abrupt lane change from the far-left lane onto the off-ramp. That abrupt lane change caused the motorcycle to collide with the SUV, police say.
The chase began when a car fled from a traffic stop. Officers had learned the driver was wanted on a misdemeanor traffic warrant with the Tarrant Police Department. The passenger was a 20-year-old male wanted for a "no bond murder warrant" with Jefferson County.
Both suspects were apprehended and taken into custody.
