A sheriff’s department in Oklahoma may be making some policy changes after a woman escaped from her cuffs last week, accessed a deputy’s rifle, and fired shots wounding a deputy and a bystander.

Grady County Undersheriff Gary Boggess tells FOX25 the woman was able to reach a console that included several switches, in particular one that is used for a deputy to unlock a rifle secured in the patrol vehicle. He explains she could see the switch labeled “gun” and activate the unlocking mechanism.

“That's gonna be replaced. We're gonna put a switch someplace else in the vehicle to lock our gun," says Boggess, who describe this as a unique incident. “Once it happens then you go back and try to make sure it never happens again. And that's what we're looking at."

Police say Rachel Zion Clay, after slipping out of her cuffs and grabbing the AR-15, fired 10 rounds from inside the patrol vehicle. Both a deputy and the civilian sustained non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released from the hospital. Clay was charged with three counts of shooting with the intent to kill.
