A suspect wearing tactical gear and armed with a semi-automatic rifle opened fire Sunday night in north Phoenix, killing two people and injuring five others, including two officers, Phoenix Police said.
The unidentified suspect was also killed in the incident, Fox 10 reports.
The incident began at around 8:30 p.m. near Interstate 17 and Deer Valley Road when the suspect walked out of a motel and began firing randomly, Phoenix Police Sgt. Vincent Cole said Monday.
Investigators say surveillance video in the area showed the suspect leaving a room at the motel and going on a shooting spree. A man and a woman who were riding in a car that pulled into the parking lot were shot and killed by the suspect.
One responding officer was shot in the shoulder and the second was hit by shrapnel, including in the face. Both officers were hospitalized. One officer has since been released and the other remains in the hospital. Both suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
Three other people were injured in the incident. They were treated and released.
