UT Deputy Killed When Hit by Cement Truck

“Deputy Baker was a kind and generous person who was always there for his teammates. We want his family to know that we are here to support them as they grieve this tragic loss,” said Sheriff Rosie Rivera in a statement.

A Utah deputy was killed last weekend while on his way to work when a cement truck did not stop at a light and struck his vehicle. Monday officials confirmed the driver killed as Deputy Joel Baker, of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.

“Deputy Baker was a kind and generous person who was always there for his teammates. We want his family to know that we are here to support them as they grieve this tragic loss,” said Sheriff Rosie Rivera in a statement.

Baker was in uniform and was on his way to a shift at the Salt Lake County Jail at the time of the accident, reports FOX13. Lehi police said the cement truck driver is cooperating with the investigation and impairment does not appear to be a contributing factor at this time.

Baker leaves behind his wife and their 1-year-old son, reports KSLTV. Their family has set up a GoFundMe* campaign to help raise money to cover funeral costs.
