LA Officer Shoots Man Choking Him with Police Baton

“During the physical altercation, he gained control of the officer’s baton and began choking the officer from behind with the baton," LSP reports in a news release.

Alexandria, LA, police say early Thanksgiving morning an officer shot a man who they allege took control of the officer’s baton and used it to choke the officer.

The Alexandria Police Department requested the Louisiana State Police (LSP) lead the investigation. The state agency reports the officer responded to a complaint of a man running into traffic. The officer arrived and encountered 34-year-old Jason Shackleford, who initiated a “lengthy physical altercation,” according to LSP.

“During the physical altercation, he gained control of the officer’s baton and began choking the officer from behind with the baton.  While being choked, the officer discharged his firearm and shot Shackleford,” LSP reports in a news release.

The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment and has been released. Shackleford was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is listed in stable condition.
