A five-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department was killed Wednesday evening responding to a domestic call about a man chasing a woman with a gun.
Officer Andres Vasquez-Lasso, 32, was killed in an exchange of fire as he and another officer pursued the suspect on foot. CPD Superintendent David Brown said at a press conference that the suspect turned and fired at the fallen officer who returned fire critically wounding the suspect.
Officer Vasquez-Lasso was hit multiple times and died at a local hospital, Brown said.
The 18-year-old suspect remains hospitalized. Brown said the suspect has one prior offense.
Alderman Raymond Lopez told Fox 32 the suspect was charged in connection with gang activity last year.
