An officer with the Menasha Police Department was attacked while investigating an ax incident at a business after responding to a call of a man armed with axe acting erratically at a local business, the department says.  

Menasha PD posted surveillance video of the incident on its Facebook page, saying—in part—store personnel had convinced the man to put the axe down. The responding officer attempted to deescalate the situation but the suspect began walking towards the axe. 

"Without provocation, he struck the officer multiple times in the head with his fists," the agency said on Facebook. "An off-duty police officer, who happened to be in the store on unrelated business, and other customers, worked with the Menasha officer to gain control of the subject who was violently fighting."

The subject was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

The agency's social media post concluded, "The Menasha Police Department would like to thank the quick actions of several alert citizens, store employees, and other responding agencies in helping the officers stabilize this incident."
