Virginia Officer Strikes, Kills Pedestrian While Responding to Call

An officer with the Fairfax County (VA) Police Department was responding to a call of disorderly subjects when a pedestrian reportedly walked into an intersection against a "don't walk" signal. The pedestrian was struck and fatally injured.

According to the Washington Post , the officer—identified only as a four-year member of the department—was driving through a green light when he struck 40-year-old Carlos Romeo Montoya in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police Chief Edwin C. Roessler Jr. said, "The best information we have right now is the officer did have a green light, was proceeding through the intersection, and that the pedestrian unfortunately was crossing against the ‘don’t walk’ sign."

The officer exited the vehicle and attempted to provide aid, and Montoya was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The officer involved in the accident has been assigned to administrative duties pending investigation.
