A registered nurse who saw a Cary (Va.) Police motorcycle officer seriously injured in a traffic accident rushed to his aid and helped save his life.
Jessica Elliott saw Officer Chad Penland accellerate with lights and sirens blaring toward the Morrisville-Carpenter Road and N.C. 55 intersection, where he was struck by a white pickup truck.
Elliott, 37, left her GMC truck three cars back, called 911 and rushed into the intersection to help the fallen officer, who lay bloody and bruised. Here's an excerpt of what happened next:
Penland's helmet stayed on his head, but she feared the worst. He was choking on his blood, she said.
"His airway wasn't stable. He didn't have an airway. He had lots of injuries to his jaw," she said.
"He was in bad shape, really bad shape."
