Virginia Department Suspends Officer for Assisting ICE
An officer with the Fairfax County (VA) Police Department has been suspended from duty because he assisted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in identifying and taking into custody an undocumented immigrant who was a fugitive after failing to appear for a deportation hearing.
An officer with the Fairfax County (VA) Police Department has been suspended from duty because he assisted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in identifying and taking into custody an undocumented immigrant who was a fugitive after failing to appear for a deportation hearing.
According to the Washington Times, the officer—whose name has not been released—was working a traffic accident when he ran the individual's name and got an arrest warrant hit from ICE.
The officer notified ICE and the man was taken into custody by a responding ICE employee.
Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin Roessler said in a statement, "Our county is one of the most diverse counties in the nation and no one should have the perception that FCPD is acting as a civil immigration agent for ICE. This matter damages our reputation and the longstanding policy that I have stated many times that our officers shall not act as immigration agents."
It was not immediately clear if the officer will appeal the suspension.
