Virginia County Taking Steps to Create New Police Department

County Chair Phyllis Randall has been pressing for a new police agency to cover the entire county, saying that it would increase transparency and accountability of law enforcement activities.

If Loudoun decides to hand primary law enforcement duties to a police department, it will be the first Virginia county to do so since 1995.

Voters in Loudon County, VA, may soon be faced with a referendum that could lead elected officials to begin the formal process of creating a county-wide police agency.

According to Loudon Now , the proposed new agency would begin to provide primary police services in 2024, while the sheriff's department would continue to maintain the jails, courthouses, and other services.
