Dash cam video released by Massachusetts State Police reportedly shows a man throwing a hatchet at the windshield of a state police vehicle.

The incident happened Monday Nov. 11 in Springfield, WCVB reports.

A newly sworn trooper from the latest training troop and his veteran training partner were working in their vehicle when a man approached them. State police said they observed the man was carrying a hatchet, knives and a machete.

"The man engaged the Troopers asking them why they wouldn’t exit the cruiser and arrest him for the aforementioned weapons in his hands," state police wrote in a statement . "Troopers attempted to de-escalate the situation and told the man he was free to leave. The man remained at the cruiser shaking his head."

The veteran trooper told his new colleague to put the car in reverse and create some distance.

"As soon as the cruiser moved backwards, the man raised his hand and struck the car several times on the hood, right fender, and right head light," state police said. "As the cruiser continued away, the man wound up and threw the hatchet at the passenger side of the windshield."

Together with other arriving officers, they drew their weapons and ordered the man to drop the blades.

"The man eventually surrendered.
