Video of a running gun battle between an Indiana officer and a suspect during a vehicle pursuit that ended in a gunfight between the suspect and multiple officers from two agencies has been released by the Indianapolis Metro Police Department.

The suspect eventually stopped his vehicle, and the gunfight continued. Another Lawrence officer and Indianapolis officers also joined the fight.

A Lawrence, Indiana, Police officer fires a rifle through his own windshield during a vehicle pursuit where the suspect opened fire on him.

The Dec. 30, 2024, incident began with a traffic stop by a Lawrence (Indiana) Police officer.
Video captured from the officer’s vehicle shows the suspect—later identified by law enforcement as 48-year-old Kenneth Thaddeus Roberts Jr.—pull over into a parking lot and let out a passenger. He then drove away despite warnings from the officer not to do so.
The pursuit continues across the parking lot and into the street.
Video from the pursuit shows the suspect firing out the rear window of his car at the officer, police say.
The officer continued the pursuit while shooting back at the suspect through the windshield of his patrol vehicle with an AR-variant rifle.
Shots were fired by the suspect and the officer several times as they drove.
The suspect eventually stopped his vehicle, and the gunfight continued. Another Lawrence officer and Indianapolis officers also joined the fight.
Fire from the suspect stopped and the officers called for him to show his hands and get out of his vehicle. There was no response.
Indianapolis SWAT arrived on scene and approached the suspect’s car in an armored vehicle. They found the suspect unresponsive.
Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene after the suspect was secured and pronounced the suspect deceased.
There are reports of civilian vehicle having been hit by rounds, WTHR reports.
But no civilians or officers were wounded or injured during the incident.
