In a news release, ISP said officers were alerted around 9:35 a.m. to a vehicle traveling on Interstate 74 in Champaign that authorities believe had been involved in an armed robbery in Texas.
The vehicle stopped at gas station off Interstate 55 in Lexington around 10:30 a.m. One person in the vehicle, 19-year-old Joseph Martin Hernandez of Texas, got out of the vehicle to go inside the store, WGLT reports.
Body camera video shows police telling Hernandez to get on the ground, and one officer telling another to get him into handcuffs. It also shows police attempting to take the driver, 18-year-old Ryan Aeron Stanley Hurst of Arkansas, into custody.
Officers can be seen surrounding the car from a distance. Multiple shots ring out and officers also yell for Hurst to get his hands up and to get out of the car.
ISP said officers exchanged gunfire with Hurst after Hurst first raised a gun at them. The video shows Hurst pointing what appears to be a gun at approaching officers.
Hurst was wounded in the shooting. Officers managed to convince him to surrender.
McLean County prosecutors charged him with three counts of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and one count of aggravated assault.
Hernandez was taken into custody for further investigation.
