Oakland, CA, police have arrested a man they say triggered a tense standoff with police after firing a rifle at officers and residents near a local high school Friday morning.
The standoff began after a report of a sniper armed with a rifle and scope being spotted near Interstate Highway 580.
Police quickly rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area. The gunman was shooting out a window of a home on Las Vegas Avenue located near the high school which was on lock down.
The man had been shooting at residents and parked cars and fired on Oakland police officers as they arrived, Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said.
No injuries to neighbors or officers have been reported. At one point, one officer fired on the suspect, according to Watson, but she didn’t know if he was hit by the gunfire.
The suspect, identified as Jesse Enjaian, had been injured before he was taken into custody, but Watson said it’s not clear if he was shot by the officer or was wounded some other way. He was taken to a hospital with an injury not considered life-threatening, CBS San Francisco reports.
