A Sanibel Island, FL, police officer was wounded during a drive-by shooting Sunday night. A suspect is in custody.
The situation began around 8 p.m. when the officer, identified as Jarred Ciccone, was shot by a passing motorist while conducting a traffic stop in the 2300 block of Periwinkle Way.
The gunman fled the scene and was eventually located in the Dunes neighborhood where a shootout ensued between the man and responding officers.
The suspect was struck by gunfire in the shoulder and back before being taken into custody.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says that Jon Webster Hay was booked into the Lee County Jail early Monday morning for shooting the Sanibel officer. He's charged with Attempted Homicide.
The officer involved was shot in the shoulder and taken to the Lee Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released, NBC 2 reports.
