A pickup truck driver changed lanes and intentionally hit a trooper conducting a traffic stop along a highway on Thursday, killing him instantly, and was charged with murder, police said.
The Associated Press reports Almond Upton admitted to police that he deliberately swerved his pickup truck from the left passing lane to the right shoulder to hit Trooper Christopher Skinner on Interstate 81 near Binghamton around noon, police Superintendent Joseph A. D'Amico said. Upton, of Melrose, Florida, had sideswiped two other vehicles with his 2014 Toyota Tacoma, D'Amico said.
Upton was taken into custody an hour later after a police dog tracked him into nearby woods, where he was found naked. Police said he didn't appear to be drunk or on drugs.
On his way into Town of Chenango Court for his arraignment Thursday night, Upton told Action News he wasn't sure why he did it. But on the way out after he was officially charged with murder in the first degree, he told a different story.
"I was two miles away from the Connecticut border, and all of a sudden I'm in Binghamton New York, being beamed to New York," Upton said to WBNG TV.
"The cop that got killed, I don't know how it happened, there had to be a time warp. Honestly, I'm not bullshitting. I have proof in Connecticut. It's a time warp or something had to happen," Upton added.
