Authorities said Dominick Musulman, 30, of Antioch, died at a local hospital after the incident on Tuesday, reports KTVU.
At about 2:30 p.m., officers responded to reports that a man had been stabbed on Prospect Street near San Jose Avenue, Concord police spokesman Cpl. Christopher Blakely said.
Police officers located the suspect in the backyard of a home in the 1400 block of San Jose Avenue shortly after the stabbing. Police opened fire on the suspect, who was shot several times, authorities said. Police said Musulman had a history with police but they did not elaborate on the history.
Musulman died after being rushed for medical care. The stabbing victim was also transported to a hospital and is expected to recover. The police dog, named Yelle, was taken to a vet and was home resting Wednesday. Police said the dog was under medication and expected to be off duty for several days.
Police said the suspect and the stabbing victim were acquaintances. A motive for the stabbing attack was not immediately released.
