Brian P. Boetig, special agent in charge of the FBI in Buffalo, N.Y., has written an opinion piece on the police culture that appeared in The Buffalo News this past weekend.
In the article, Boetig says the law enforcement culture is noble and commendable when officers support fellow officers by coming together to reaffirm their commitment to the families of slain officers or selflessly backing up other officers in distress. This commitment to the law enforcement brotherhood is highly revered.
Alternatively, when officers protect wayward officers who perform illegal or unethical actions by favoring loyalty over integrity, this camaraderie becomes reprehensible. For both its good and bad, officer camaraderie is part of our law enforcement culture.
He went on to say, "Throughout my career, I have contributed to its current condition during my service as a university, municipal, state and federal law enforcement officer. My family has shaped it for over a century with more than 75 years of combined service in New York."
