A Henrico County, VA, police officer died as the result of a three-vehicle crash Wednesday night.
Officer Trey Sutton,24, died Thursday morning at an area hospital.
Authorities say a Henrico police cruiser and two other vehicles crashed at an intersection. Sutton, another officer, and a third individual in the cruiser were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, WAVY reports. The preliminary investigation indicates a Dodge pickup truck collided with the Henrico police car as it crossed through the intersection.
Police say Sutton was driving but investigators are reviewing body-camera video, conducting interviews, and trying to recreate the crash scene. It’s still unclear who ran the red light at the intersection, according to Henrico Police Chief Eric D. English, but alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
Sutton joined Henrico police in June 2021, graduated from the police academy in February, and was training in the department’s patrol bureau at the time of the crash.
